San Francisco’s J Boogie gave this away on Valentine’s Day via his SoundCloud Profile, and said: “Goin’ out to all the weekend lovers out there. Took my favorite PillowTalk slow jam and bumped up the BPMs for the dancefloor. Threw on some Moombah drums, and voila! Happy Valentine’s Day y’all. Love the one, (or two or three) you’re with.”

This week’s guest mix features the Detroit born, SF Bay Area based – Rich Korach. The As You Like It (AYLI) resident comes correct with impeccable track selection and programming. In recent years, the art of DJing sometimes gets lost in translation among the politics of club promoters, managers, and labels, Rich is a fresh reminder of what raw talent and love of music really sounds like. Will we ever get sick of hearing Luke Jenner belt out “HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE? HOW DEEP? HOW DEEP?”? No, we won’t. Keep the remixes coming. Toomy Disco jumped on our radar with this gem last July, so when I saw they contributed a mix to The Rapture’s HDIYL remix contest, I immediately listened & liked. Your turn!

Matthew Kyle – I Want Marvin [320k - mp3]
Unbelievable disco chugger from New York’s Matthew Kyle. The story behind this one is this was supposed to come out as a vinyl-only, 300 limited pressing on Diner City Sounds. Without Kyle’s consent, the label decided to go digital and put up for sale. Matthew retaliated by releasing the entire EP for free on SoundCloud. We’re sorry you got screwed Matt, but we’re grateful for the amazing tunes!

Mondee Oliver – Make Me Want You (Leftside Wobble Edit) [320k - mp3]
Very cool piece from the UK’s edit-master, Leftside Wobble. Supposedly the original version (either on Chicago’s Gherkin or or Italy’s D-Vision) is currently changing hands for £40 plus on Discogs! This is a deal if you ask me.

The Beloved – Sun Rising (Jay Shepheard Edit) [320k - mp3]
One of our favorite house records of all time gets a respectful 2012 update. It’s the perfect dub that never existed before. Absolutely beautiful record. Go, Jay!

Equip – XXXO (Proto Acid House 1983) [320k - mp3]
Lifted from Greg Wilson’s amazing Electrofunroots blog. In 2007, a limited one-sided 12” of ‘XXXO’ by Equip was pressed. Previously unreleased, this 1983 recording was an uncanny harbinger of the Acid House era, which was still a number of years in the future. Read the entire story here on his blog.

Not really sure how we stumbled on Miguel Puente, but we’re really glad we did! He’s been relentless with amazing remixes for labels like No. 19 and Hot Waves. He laid down an incredible set for us on a beautiful September night at Le Bain (check out the video below), and this mix is simply brilliant!

Off of one of my favorite EPs of 2011, Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard & DFA offer up the radio edit of “Hold Me Close”. It’s the lesser known of the songs on the EP, but it’s too be expected when it’s next to a monster like “Gabriel”.

My favorite cut from the free Brainfeeder Sampler given away last week. Brainfeeder just came home with “Label of the Year” at Giles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards. Nab the other 11 tracks here on their site.

OOFT! – Funtime [320k - mp3]
OOFT! is Ali OOFT & Grame Clark aka The Revenge, and this was their gift to us for reaching 5,000 followers on their Soundcloud Profile. Funky, filtered, rolling disco-tinged house burner!

SBTRKT – Hold On (Them Jeans Remix) [320k - mp3]
The original “Hold On” was one of my top 5 tracks of 2011. LA’s Them Jeans gives it a respectful dancefloor-ready, house-meets-bass treatment. Just last week it got a spin from Skream on Radio 1. A+.

Pillowtalk – Long Lost Friends (Unreleased Vocal Mix) [320k - mp3]
Pillowtalk have been feeling generous lately! We get a whole :54 seconds more in this extended version with never-before-heard spoken-word vocals. Nice touch, fellas!

Mike Simonetti – Louie Louie (Perseo Edits) [128k - mp3]
This was a CD-only track from a disco & pop edits compilation that came out on Perseo, a sublabel of Mike Simonett’s Italians Do It Better. It now lives buried for free on Mike’s Soundcloud, and here, of course!

Mark E – Oranges (Jacques Renault Edit) [320k - mp3]
New York disco aficionado, Jacques Renault gives Mark E’s “Oranges” off of his self-titled debut album a few functional tweaks making it much more dance-floor & DJ friendly. Recently trainspotted on Azari & III’s Essential Mix on Radio 1. What a record!

The folks at DFA really know how to work us fans (no pun intended). The way these guys have been releasing stuff in the last year or so have had us devouring, and salivating for more. We’re kind of obsessed with 2 Bears, their new album is off the wall, and we highly recommend you buy it. This is a radio edit of “Work,” the EP just before the album. Get into it!

Chicago’s Kid Color contributed this to the “How Deep Is Your Love” remix competition that DFA, but surprisingly didn’t score too high. We can’t understand why, as we think it’s fantastic! Performed with live bass, guitar, and lifted direct from his Sound Cloud. It’s OK Kyle, you’ve won us over.

Sade – I Couldn’t Love You More (Vin Sol & Charles McCloud Revisited) [320k - mp3]
Ahhhh, Sade. Nothing more soothing than her voice. LA’s Vin Sol & Charles McCloud give “I Couldn’t Love You More” the deep, dreamy treatment that just begs to be played outside outside in the sun.

12th Planet – Jail Break [320k - mp3]
This is the only cut off 12th Planet’s new album “The End Is Near” that I could tolerate. Not only that, I kinda dig it. Slow burning, pushing, pulling, and nicely put together.

Vin Sol – Not The One [320k - mp3]
While raiding Vin Sol’s Soundcloud Profile, we found this gem too! We could easily have posted 10 dope Vin Sol tracks this week, but we thought we’d spread it out a bit. Rock on, Vin.

We love Blondes. Not just the ditsy ones. We’re totally obsessed with Brooklyn-based Sam Haar and Zach Steinman. This is another preview from their self-titled debut album that drops February 7th on RVNG Intl. We. Can’t. Wait.

Mayer Hawthorne ft. The Festivals – You Got The Makings Of A Good Lover (PillowTalk Edit) [320k - mp3]
Damn, this is sexy. Classic, feel-good & effective. If the doo-wop groups of the 50s & 60s were still alive today and made house music, they’d sound like Pillowtalk. Mayer & Sammy duet included as well. Killer.

Lucky Paul – Rather Go Blind (Etta James Rework) [320k - mp3]
Found this one cruising through XLR8R, and they put it best: “Before he releases his “Elephant Island” single via somethinksounds, New Zealand-based producer Lucky Paul (whom you may remember from this) has delivered a timely rework of Etta James’ classic “I’d Rather Go Blind.” This tribute of a production preserves much of the song’s original structure, keeping the swaying pace nice and slow, but toys with its overall arrangement—adding in bits of synthesizer, subtle bass tones, and beefy percussion before dipping the whole tune into a lush reverb chamber. Look for Lucky Paul’s new 12″, which also features remixes from the likes of Midland and Ossie, on Feburary 13.” RIP, Etta.

Episode #045 with Paul Raffaele & guest DJ Kaos (Jolly Jams, DFA).

Living the life of a rockstar is an understatement for iconic Berlin DJ / Producer Kaos. He’s had more late nights then Mick Jagger, more women then Wilt Chamberlain and enough drugs to sink the Titanic – in weight alone (thanks for this one OnTheFly.com.au). With this attitude, his disco orientation and production where-with-all, over the years Kaos has become a key player in Berlin’s underground scene – no small feat in a place saturated with talent… and party animals. From his beat meanderings on the renowned Compost label in the early nineties as the central figure of Turntable Terranova, Kaos has stuck to his guns and made his mark on the scene. This one is real special for us. We know you’ll enjoy!
